MAINTENANCE, INSPECTION AND SAFE USE OF A-FRAME GANTRIES

MAINTENANCE:-
It is usual that the maintenance requirements are done at the same time as the lifting machine(hoist)
Bearings and screw jacks should be well lubricated.
The running surface of the track should be kept clean and free from debris.
INSPECTIONS:-
The A-frame / mobile gantry should be regularly inspected and where any of the following defects are found or suspected it should not be used and referred to a competent person immediately.
- i. Damaged wheels, jacks or ineffective brakes
- ii. Any structural defects, damage, distortion or cracked welds
- iii. Loose or missing bolts or locking pins etc.
- iv. Damaged or missing runway end stops
- v. Unreadable markings (i.e. safe working load)
INSPECTION POINTS:-
USING AN A-FRAME SAFELY:-
- i. Always check the mobile gantry before use, never use if defective
- ii. Ensure all bolts and pins are in place
- iii. Make sure the surface where the gantry is placed is level, even and capable of taking the load, using floor plates if needed.
- iv. Position the a-frame gantry so the lifting hoist is directly over the load and the beam is in line with the direction of travel required
- v. Where fitted, apply brakes, parking jacks or wheel locks before raising the load
- vi. Avoid swinging loads, the centre of gravity of the load should always be under the runway centre line or the gantry may fall over.
- vii. Never rotate the load unless the centre of gravity will remain under the centre line of the runway beam
- viii. Never move a mobile gantry under load
- ix. Never use a vehicle, winch etc. to tow a gantry
- x. Never place ladders against, nor climb on an unrestrained gantry
- xi. Disconnect the power before moving the mobile a-frame to a new position
ABOVE ALL, DON'T FORGET!!!
- Ø NEVER OVERLOAD A MOBILE GANTRY / A-FRAME
- Ø NEVER TRY TO DRAG LOADS
- Ø NEVER MOVE A GANTRY UNDER LOAD
- Ø NEVER SWING LOADS TO THE SIDE OR BEYOND THE END OF THE TRACK
- Ø NEVER CLIMB ON AN UNRESTRAINED GANTRY
