BASIC INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE SAFE USE OF VERTICAL PLATE CLAMPS

Including inspection and maintenance.

This information is of a general nature only covering the main points of using vertical plate clamps safely.

NEVER;

  • 1. USE DEFECTIVE PLATE CLAMPS OR ACCESSORIES
  • 2. ATTEMPT TO LIFT MORE THAN ONE PLATE IN THE CLAMP
  • 3. LOWER FROM VERTICAL TO HORIZONTAL OR VISE-VERSA UNLESS THE CLAMPS HAVE BEEN DESIGNED FOR THAT PURPOSE
  • 4. OBLIQUELY LOAD VERTICAL CLAMPS
  • 5. PUT PACKING BETWEEN THE PLATE AND THE JAWS OF THE CLAMP
  • 6. USE PLATE CLAMPS ON HARD OR POLISHED SURFACES UNLESS DESIGNED FOR THAT PURPOSE
  • 7. FORCE OR WEDGE THE HOOK OF THE LIFTING APPLIANCE INTO THE EYE OF THE CLAMP

ALWAYS;

  • 1. Put the clamp onto the plate as far as it will go
  • 2. Check the clamp is directly over the centre of gravity of the load
  • 3. Ensure the clamp is fully locked or tightened onto the plate before lifting
  • 4. Inspect plate clamps before use and before placing into storage
  • 5. Take great care to ensure the plate is fully supported before attempting to release the clamp
  • 6. Store and handle clamps correctly, always clean and dry before storing

MAINTENANCE AND SERVICE INSPECTIONS

Vertical plate lifting clamps should be regularly cleaned and moving parts lubricated, unless suppliers instructions indicate otherwise. In the case of Clamps with jaws lined with friction materialcare must be taken to ensure no lubricant comes into contact with the friction material

Regularly inspect the plate clamp and if any of the following are suspected or apparent then refer the clamp to a competent person for examination and repair if possible:

  • Wear
  • Damage/distortion to jaws
  • Frame opening out or cracked
  • In-secure, worn of bent pins,bolts etc.
  • Worn friction grip material
  • Bent or unsatisfactory acting locking lever
  • Tight or bent or damaged clamping threads
  • Corrosion
  • Illegible markings

PLEASE NOTE;

Teeth of jaws must not be re-sharpened or re-cut unless this has been approved by the maker.
