Wire rope has come a long way since it was invented by German mining engineer, Wilhelm Albert in the 1830's, for use in mining.
Wire rope is now made up from steel filaments wrapped into a strand, then several strands are twisted into a wire, surrounding a central core.
Wire rope has many uses today, from use on cranes and hoists, suspension bridges, to suspended stairs and shelves in the modern home.
Wire rope is available in a wide range of styles and thicknesses, and finishes, galvanised or stainless, from 4mm to 70mm plus diameters,
and in a variety of lays (left/right, langs, equal lay etc) for different applications as well as different finishes and end terminations, all of which we at lifting gear direct we can supply to your specifications.
When considering which wire rope you will need to do the job you want, here are a few things to bear in mind;
- Breaking strength, always buy one with a higher breaking strength than you will need, do not regularly load a wire rope up to its maximum limit for safety and increased lifespan.
- Corrosion resistance, some can be extra treated
- Flexibility, most important when used with machines, such as cranes and elevators.
- Lifespan, consider how long you wish the rope to last.
- Diameter, what thickness of rope do you require.
- Lay, do you need a specific rope lay for the job.
- End fittings, consider what, if any, type of terminations you will need, there are many to choose from.
- Stretch, the rate and degree will vary depending on the type of rope
