HOW A TIRFOR WINCH / WIRE ROPE PULLING MACHINE WORKS.

A Tirfor type pulling machine / winch has neither gears nor wheels.
There are two jaws which alternately pull the wire rope along with the load in the direction needed, almost like pulling on a rope with both hands.
The jaws self clamp providing immediate grip and safety, and the heavier the load, the tighter the jaws will grip. There is a release device which lets the wire rope be put in between the jaws.
Tirfor winches are extremely versatile as they can be used in any position, either vertical, diagonal or horizontal, or even at any angle. There is no limit to the length of wire rope that can be used, so can be changed accordingly, and the capacity can also be increased by using longer lengths of wire ropes along with blocks and pulleys, using this sheave block technique the capacity of the tirfor can be increased by a factor of 2,3,4 or more. The figures given must be multiplied by the nominal capacity of the device, and when calculating the working load limit, include a loss of about 4% per sheave, due to the friction of the sheaves.
Tirfors or wire rope pulling machines as they are often called are very safe and reliable. They are in constant control of the load when lifting or lowering and with great accuracy to within about 1mm.
When the tirfor and load are stationary the load is automatically distributed between the two jaw units.
Tirfors also have an overload safety mechanism, and some tirfors can be used for lifting personnel.
