HAND / MANUAL CHAIN HOISTS
Here we will be talking about hand chain hoists, why they are used, where and how.
Hand chain hoists are also commonly referred to as; chain blocks, block and tackle, manual chain hoists or manual hoists.
Hand chain hoists provide a very versatile way of lifting heavy loads with great precision, they are portable and cost efficient and are extremely useful in areas where there is no electric supply, or using electric could be hazardous. Manual chain hoists are most often used in workshops, factories and many other forms of industry.
A hand/manual chain hoist is attached to a suitable anchor point with its top hook, usually a beam, jib crane or gantry system, the load is then attached to the lower hook, The operator will then pull down on one of the chains which then turns over 2 different sized gears which multiplies the force, this then raises the other side of the chain to which the load is attached. Hand chain hoists will have a brake system to then hold the load in position, whilst manoeuvring to its resting place. Most will also have an overload prevention device fitted for extra safety, they can also be supplied with a chain bucket which are extremely useful, as they not only keep the excess chain out of the way, and prevent people from tripping, they also protect the chain from damage.
When using hand/manual chain hoists safety is a top concern, next time we will discuss the main safety aspects to consider when using these hoists.
