Beam Clamps - Safe Usage

This post provides some useful guidelines regarding the safe use of beam clamps, in accordance with section 6 of the health and safety at work act 1974.

The beam clamps safety will be mainly governed by the requirements for the lifting device with which it will be utilised but the following do’s and don’ts  must always be followed.

ALWAYS;

• Store and handle with care
• Inspect prior to each use for defects
• Check the beam is adequate for the load and the clamp is fixed securely
• Ensure the beam clamp has the correct capacity rating for the load intended
• Ensure the beam clamp is directly above the loads centre of gravity.
• If 2 clamps are used together a spreader beam may be needed, to ensure that neither clamp exceeds the SWL.

NEVER;

• Use unidentifiable or uncertified clamps
• Use on distorted or damaged beams
• Exceed the safe working load
• Replace any bolts or shackles without consulting the supplier
• Obliquely load the clamp
• Force the hooks of devices into the shackle or other anchor point device
• Drop a beam clamp
• Use a defective clamp
