Jib Crane; What; How; Why and Where
Posted : Thursday 8th December 2011
During this news page we discuss what a jib crane actually is, how they work, why you should use one, and where they are most commonly used.
A Jib crane may also be called a swing jib and is a type of crane system to which a hoisting device is usually fixed to aid in the lifting and lowering and moving of heavy objects within a specific work area. A Jib crane is normally fixed to the floor or a wall providing they are structurally sound and capable of withstanding the loads to be lifted. (An independent assessment may need to be made to clarify this).
The Jib consists of a supporting beam or column (depending on where it is to be fitted) to which a jib arm (also called a boom) is cantilevered out from. It may be overbraced which provide larger lifting capacities and more underbeam height/space, or underbraced which are ideal where head room is tight. It is the jib arm or boom which rotates to allow the load to be moved from one place to another within the slewing area. Lifting Gear Direct’s standard jib cranes can slew up to 270 degrees, though we can often supply others if requested; We can also produce the jib crane with the jib arm in lengths up to 8 metres. Our overbraced jib cranes are available from 125kg up to 2000kg capacities.
So why should you use a Jib crane? Basically it is a much safer and quicker way to lift and move loads, placing no strain on the human skeleton, and so no injuries, also the jib can lift capacities that no human could, so it is also cost effective.
You will usually find Jib cranes in most industrial settings and also dockyards and warehouses for loading and unloading in specific areas. The construction industry also uses jib cranes as do car garages for lifting and lowering heavy engines.
