There are right and wrong methods for using plate clamps; here are the main points which myst always be adhered to.

Always : Use in pairs, 1 pair of short plates and 2 or more pairs for longer plates, ensite the plate is inserted to the back of the plate clamp, ensure clamps with teeth only lift one plate at a time.
Never : Use bundles of different sized plate, use endless chain slings, use four leg slings

Correct way to lift long plates : Always use 2 clamps and a beam. Plate must be at full depth Lever locked into place. Chipped teeth are only allowed if less than ½ the width of the whole tooth and teeth next to it are undamaged

Always : Use a safety hook or sling, ensure lever is locked, check plate reaches the rear of the plate clamp, All loads that weigh between the minimum and maximum working load limits can be lifted through 180 degrees in the plane of the clamp, ensure plate has no grease, liquids, scale, polish etc on them, check clamps hold prior to lifting. You must never use a damaged or worn plate clamp

All loads that weigh between the minimum and maximum working load limits can be lifted and turned through 180 degrees in the plane of the clamp.
Note position of the locking lever, if on top you will need to lift the plate clamp when sliding, on to the plate to permit free movement of the jaw.
Make sure the plate is in contact with the rear and lock is in position.
Slings must always be in ther vertical position
Care should be taken when the clamp takes the least weight at the top dead centre

Never lift plate unless fully engaged to the rear of the clamps
Only lift 1 plate at a time,
A spreader beam should be used for long plates
Never use endless chain slings
Check positioning of the clamp prior to use, a wrongly positioned clamp will reposition itself when it reaches the top dead centre and can release the plate
There should be enough slack in the chain sling to permit the lever to fully operate
Never force the chain lug if stuck, tap gently
Any force will possibly cause the camshaft to fail
You must not rapidly lower the load to the ground as the crane hook will force the clamp open and release the plate
Never lower unless the lever is in the locked position
