Our own range is packed with options for customers with diverse needs. We can build custom swing jib cranes to the exact specifications you provide. We can also install, test, inspect and repair these cranes to give you peace of mind throughout each model’s life cycle. Here is a brief overview of the different types of lifting jibs  to help you get started. Just click through to the product pages for in-depth details.

A little about Jib Cranes

A Jib crane may also be called a swing jib and is a type of crane system to which a hoisting device is usually fixed to aid in the lifting and lowering and moving of heavy objects within a specific work area. A Jib crane is normally fixed to the floor or a wall providing they are structurally sound and capable of withstanding the loads to be lifted. (An independent assessment may need to be made to clarify this).

The Jib consists of a supporting beam or column (depending on where it is to be fitted) to which a jib arm (also called a boom) is cantilevered out from. It may be over-braced which provide larger lifting capacities and more under-beam height/space, or under-braced which are ideal where head room is tight.  It is the jib arm or boom which rotates to allow the load to be moved from one place to another within the slewing area. Lifting Gear Direct’s standard jib cranes can slew up to 270 degrees, though we can often supply others if requested; We can also produce the jib crane with the jib arm in lengths up to 8 metres. Our over-braced options are available from 125kg up to 2000kg capacities.

So why should you use a Swing Jib crane?

Basically it is a much safer and quicker way to lift and move loads, placing no strain on the human skeleton, and so no injuries, also the jib can lift capacities that no human could, so it is also cost effective.

You will usually find Jib cranes in most industrial settings and also dockyards and warehouses for loading and unloading in specific areas. The construction industry also uses jib cranes as do car garages for lifting and lowering heavy engines.

Looking after one of our Jib Cranes

Lifting Gear Direct offers complete testing and inspection services for all your lifting equipment, which should be carried out on a 6-12 month basis to comply with LOLER thorough inspections regulations. Meanwhile here are some guidelines which will help to self-inspect your Jib cranes in between your regular contracted servicing; a visual check should be done prior to each use to check for defects which may affect the safety of the jib crane; we have also listed the main points for using your jib crane safely.

INSPECTING, SERVICING AND MAINTENANCE TIPS

Regularly inspect the jib crane for; ANY DAMAGE; CRACKED OR DISTORTED WELDS; STRUCTURAL DEFECTS; MISSING OR LOOSE BOLTS; MISSING OR DAMAGED END STOPS; DIFFICULTY IN MOVING THE BEAM TROLLEY OR SLEWING THE JIB ARM; THE TROLLEY OR JIB ARM MOVE ON THEIR OWN;   If any of these are detected or suspected then you should not use the crane until it has been thoroughly examined by a trained professional.

  • You should lubricate the pivoting points on a regular basis
  • If the slewing action is obtained by manual gears or power drive they should be kept in good order and well lubricated.
  • All bolts and fixings should be frequently checked, and re-tightened if necessary.
  • Always check that the running surface is clean and clear of debris
  • Maintenance can be carried out at the same time as the additional lifting appliances used.

SAFETY TIPS FOR USING YOUR JIB CRANE.

  • Always position the jib arm carefully
  • Always check that the travel path is clear before moving the load and/or jib arm
  • You should always push loads, not pull them
  • Always take the lift slowly to avoid shock loading
  • Always ensure the block is over the centre of gravity
  • Never use a defective jib crane or accessories
  • Never drag a load using the jib arm
  • Avoid swinging the load
  • Don’t let the trolley crash into the end stops, this can cause the load to whip out which increases the effective radius, and so the load imposed on the structure and mechanisms
  • Loads should be lowered slowly and with care to avoid whipping of the jib arm.
