Harbour cranes can be fixed or mobile and are typically found at the side of a harbour, dockside or port. Ship cranes use similar operation but are situated on a ships deck. Main hoist rope and boom ropes are required to operate these types of crane and choosing the correct wire rope construction can be critical to a safe and successful operation.
A harbour crane may sometimes be referred to as a dockside crane as this is where they are usually positioned. They come in various formats – some are fixed permanently to the harbour side and others are mobile. The mobile variety may run in a rail system similar to container cranes to move up and down the harbour side. A more common harbour crane seen today is the wheeled variety that is self powered and can move around freely; this kind is ideal for smaller harbours that don't have the space for fixed systems.
A ship crane can be seen permanently fitted to the deck of a sea faring vessel but operates in the same way as a harbour/dockside crane, hence they can use the same types of steel wire rope.
Harbour cranes and Ship cranes are used to load and unload cargo from sea faring vessels; they typically have a rotational body with a boom/arm which can be raised and lowered for positioning and the hoist for lifting the load.
The hoist and the boom require different rope constructions to best suit the operational process each one handles.
Below are the key details for each rope; the full technical details can be found in the documentation area above.
All the following galvanized steel wire ropes are of the rotation resistant variety to prevent out of control spin when loads are attached. These ropes also have a compacted construction for smoother handling, good crush resistance and affords smaller diameters with the same breaking load as non-compacted rope.
Each steel rope has a Warrington type inner core where the mid layer strands(or outer layer of the two layer core) are two different sizes so when twisted together the inner and outer layers sit nicely together filling in much of the voids. This affords high flexibility and great fatigue resistance, other benefits include high breaking strength and improved stability.
Plastic impregnation is available for all ropes on special request.

24x7 RR + C
Diameters from 8mm up to 22mm are available in 1960 MPa strength rope. The Langs lay and compacted construction with Warrington core make it ideal for multi layer coiling.
24x17 RR + C
24 to 48mm diameters available with high minimum breaking load strength. This rope has rotation resistant and compacted properties.
28x7 RR + C
This high rotation resistant rope comes in diameters from 10 to 17mm in either 1960 or 2160 MPa. High service life ideal for high rise applications.
32x7 RR + C
Key properties include compaction, rotation resistance and Warrington core. 18 – 26mm diameters available in 1960 or 2160 MPa.
35x7 RR + C
These larger diameter ropes come with diameters ranging from 28mm up to 48mm. Its fully compacted layers incorporate a Warrington core.
35x17 RR + C
50.8 to 66m diameters are available in this anti-spin, high performance steel rope. Compacted, flexible and crush resistant. Great for high rise tasks.
35x26 RR + C
68, 70 and 72mm diameters are the options available for the 35x31. Featuring anti-spin, crush resistance, bend fatigue resistance and high breaking strength.
35x31 RR + C
One of the larger hoist ropes the 35x31 comes in 74 to 89mm diameters. Boasting a high service life performance with high rotation resistance.
35x36 RR + C
Available in diameters from 93mm up to a huge 109mm in 2060MPa strength steel rope. Great for high rise hoisting tasks due to the high anti spin properties.
49x36 RR + C
The largest hoist rope we offer comes in diameters from 113mm up to 125mm. Perfect for off shore cranes this rotation resistant rope has compacted strands with a plastic covered core.
The boom ropes available for these types of cranes come in two different types. We have 8 and 9 stranded ropes with plastic impregnation for optimum abrasion resistance and flexibility. The second type of boom ropes are 8 stranded with a parallel closed construction for when very high breaking strength is necessary.
8x19 PIR
With 8 outer compacted strands followed by a plastic filler before the compacted core. 6.5mm to 15mm diameter options.
8x26 PIR
16mm to 32mm diameter options available for this PIR compacted rope. 1960 and 2160MPa (mega pascals) breaking strength available.
8x31 PIR
For larger diameters up to 58mm the 8x31 makes a great harbour crane boom rope. PIR for improved rope behaviour and compacted strands for better crush resistance and handling.
8x36 PIR
60 to 65mm diameter options available in 1960 MPa. The compacted construction incorporating PIR makes this rope ideal for repetitive lifting cycles.
9x17 PIR
This galvanised rope boasts a Warrington core, PIR and compacted strands. 16 to 19mm diameters are available in either 1960 or 2160 MPa strength wire rope.
9x26 PIR
This high performing rope has a high cross sectional metallic area, Warrington core, PIR and is fully compacted. 20mm to 32mm diameter options and 2 breaking load strengths.
9x31 PIR
With 34 to 50mm diameter options this high performance rope with a Warrington core makes a great boom rope.
9x36 PIR
The largest 9 strand rope comes in diameters from 52mm up to 64mm. Ideal for heavy duty tasks. Fully compacted with PIR and Warrington core.
These ropes must only be used with both ends under tension to prevent spinning. Strands are laid parallel rather than the standard crossover.
8x19
With a high fill factor this 2160MPa high breaking strength rope comes in diameters from 6.4mm up to 15mm.
8x26
16mm up to 28.6mm diameter options in this parallel closed construction rope. Ideal for harbour crane boom ropes.
8x31
The largest boom rope in a parallel closed construction with 30mm to 52mm diameters available. Perfect when extremely high breaking loads are required.
