Drum & Barrel Handling Solutions

Our drum handling solutions include many types of equipment to assist with the handling of different types of drums and barrels. We supply products for handling the main types of drums, i.e. steel with rolling loops; mauser/egg shaped plastic; 'L' ring and fibre. Some drum handling models fit directly to the forks of a forklift truck, and others fit to a crane or both.

From drum tongs, lifters, grabs & grippers; drum trucks or forklift mounted drum handling, we can supply them all. So if you need to manoeuvre your drum vertically or horizontally, move it around from place to place or tip it over to empty it you can find the solution here at Lifting Gear Direct.

Using drum handling equipment can increase productivity whilst improving health and safety in the workplace though you should remember that even this type of lifting equipment needs testing and inspecting too, check out our lifting gear inspections page for more information on how we can take care of this for you.

Drum Tongs & Lifters, Drum Grabs & Grippers

We have a variety of drum tongs and drum lifters available which are usually fixed to a hoist’s hook to facilitate the lifting of the drum or barrel, the range includes equipment which can attach to drums in different ways with some enabling lifting in a vertical orientation and some in a horizontal orientation.

Drum tongs and lifters are probably the simplest of our range of drum handling equipment and therefore the most cost effective option. Many of these products are also much smaller than perhaps fork lift truck mounted handling products and so will be much easier to transport and store, taking up much less valuable space.

Of the drum lifter products we stock, the Raptor DN500 is amongst the simplest in terms of design. It requires that the drums themselves are oriented horizontally and lets you easily accommodate loads of up to half a tonne.

Safety is assured because the load itself is what keeps the jaws of this drum lifter closed. Compatible with drums of up to 900mm in length, this could be a good option for many common operations.

The Raptor DL500 is another straightforward drum lifter, with its universal design making it compatible with the majority of drum types. This versatility is achieved thanks to the use of a pair of chain legs with mechanical grabs fitted to the end of each. These automatically accommodate drums of all sizes in a vertical orientation, or a horizontal arrangement if this is preferable.

The Contact DTG is a vertical drum lifter which comes in several varieties, the strongest of which can easily work with loads weighing 1000kg. The sturdy lifting tongue mechanism is reliable and safe, with an integrated locking solution ensuring that it will not detach from the load unexpectedly during use. Combine this with a lifting gantry to move heavy drums in less time.

Drum trucks and Carriers

Drum trucks are similar to pallet trucks in that they enable easy movement of drums and barrels around the workplace, there are many different models to choose from which allow carrying the drums in a variety of ways, some even enable tipping the drum for emptying.

We also have a range of hydraulic drum trucks to aid in loading the drums onto a truck/lorry; there are also some drum trucks which raise the drum so it can be placed on a pallet with ease, with the legs able to straddle the pallet. Included in this range are a couple of drum stands as well as trucks for drum stacking applications.

So whether you needs are loading, emptying, holding, transporting or rotating, we have a drum truck solution.

The Raptor DE450 is an adjustable drum truck that takes the hassle out of shifting drums around site. Its large rubber wheels allow it to roll smoothly across a range of surfaces, while its built in kick stand means that it can be rested in an upright position without needing to lean against any external support. Designed to work with drums of between 15 and 55 gallons in capacity, it can cope with 450kg payloads in its own right.

A more comprehensive solution to drum lifter duties is the Raptor HJ365, which is a hydraulic drum pallet truck. It is built to be compatible with 55 gallon drums and can be used by a single operator without requiring any assistance or risking manual handling issues. Its 365kg capacity is decent, while its hydraulic components allow it to manoeuvre loads swiftly without putting the user under unnecessary strain.

Forklift mounted drum handling equipment

This excellent range of drum manipulators can make an existing forklift truck extremely versatile; simply slip them onto the forks and drum handling and emptying just got so much quicker and easier. The range includes models for simple lifting, both horizontally and vertically with varying drum connection types.

We have models which can rotate the drum from vertical to horizontal to aid stacking or emptying and some can rotate the drum to any angle you wish. There are double drum handlers available in our forklift mounted drum handling solutions range too.

So if you have a forklift truck and regularly need to handle drums in any way then check out this range of great drum handling equipment you are sure to find the solution you need.

For basic forklift mounted drum lifter duties, the FBT drum tines are a solid option. They handle drums horizontally and can provide WLLs of up to 1080kg, streamlining the process of storing and retrieving drums with 210 litres of capacity.

This range also includes the Raptor HK285a drum rotator, which as the name suggests is capable of turning heavy drums via an integrated chain system that the forklift driver can operate without leaving their seat.

Drum Rotators / Drum Turners

It is often the case that the drums you are handling will need to be tilted, turned and rotated. Drum turners are ideal if you wish to dispense the contents into another container for example. We have a great range of drum rotators or drum turners to facilitate this action. There are a number of drum trolleys which can rotate drums as well as a collection of forklift mounted drum rotators. Many drum rotators can turn the drum completely through 360 degrees whilst a few have a more limited tilt action, therefore browse the full collection to find the perfect drum turner for your needs.

Crane mounted drum handling

We supply a range of drum handling equipment which can be attached to the hook on a crane, to enable existing cranes to be utilised for drum handling, some models allow the drum to be rotated.

These attachments are dual purpose and can also be mounted to a forklift truck. Crane slung drum handling equipment enables drums to be lifted much higher than any other form of drum handling equipment. They are also capable of handling up to the full 210 litre steel drums.

The Contact DTRU range falls into this category, providing drum tipping capabilities that are suitable for drums made from a variety of materials. A pair of webbing straps keep the drums in place during tipping and it makes for a secure alternative to using fixed position drum lifter equivalents.

Other choices include the heavy duty DTR which is rated for loads weighing 1 tonne and has a crank handle-based operation to make sure that it can be operated by almost anyone.

Drum Handling Safety

Drums and barrels are commonly used to store and transport hazardous materials. These could be flammable or toxic and even if they are not a spill of any kind can cause a hazard. There is quite a lot of information available on handling drums with hazardous substances; it is essential to familiarise yourself with these procedures to help to prevent unnecessary accidents.

Using drum handling equipment can also reduce risks of injury caused by miss-handled drums. An average 55 gallon drum could weigh up to 600 lbs, imagine that dropping on your foot! Manually trying to move a drum can cause serious back, shoulder and neck injuries too, but if you use the right piece of handling equipment these risks can be minimised.

There are a number of common safety hazards which come with the territory of drum handling which is why a risk assessment is a wise move prior to the operation.

Hazards include the following scenarios;

  • Drums to heavy to manually move
  • Handling drums in restricted/confined spaces
  • Drum size and/or shape could make even empty drums awkward to handle.
  • Poor floor conditions such as slippiness, debris and other obstacles.
  • Hazardous materials
  • Drum storage in awkward spaces
  • Light or half filled drums moving around during transport.
  • Handling high volumes leading to personal strain.
