At Lifting Gear Direct we stock stainless steel shackles as well as many other types of shackles as part of our range of lifting accessories and loose tackle. These stainless steel shackles are a widely used option in certain industries, especially in case where lifting applications are carried out in corrosive environments. Keep reading to find out all you need to know about stainless steel shackles, from the benefits of their design to the load limits and dimensions that are available.
Stainless steel shackles offer greater corrosion resistance than standard alloy steel; this is due to the compounds used in stainless steel production. Chromium and nickel appear in specific quantities and also often contain molybdenum. It is the amount of chromium which chromium oxide layers which gives it the extra protection to prevent rusting and corrosion.
These compounds create very good corrosion resistant properties, especially in briny conditions. This makes stainless steel shackles perfect for use in marine applications, though they are also commonly used in water treatment plants, oil & gas works, chemical industries and food processing plants.
It is always advisable to use stainless steel shackles with other stainless steel fittings due to the fact that contact with galvanised steel can accelerate the corrosion rate.
It is also essential to check load limits thoroughly and work out which grade of shackle is fit for your purposes. Leaving anything to chance when it comes to lifting operations is not a good idea, since you could compromise safety for workers and fall foul of regulators if something goes wrong which could have been prevented via proper planning.
Lifting Gear Direct can supply a range of stainless steel shackles in both the dee and bow types, we can also supply extra long dee shackles, wide jaw shackles and twisted shackles all in stainless steel.
Our range of stainless steel shackles include all the major types of pins for securing the shackle; screw pins and the safety bolt with cotter pin are readily available.
Please note that some stainless steel shackles are not suitable for use in lifting and load bearing applications, this type of stainless steel shackle will not be stamped with a safe working load because they have not been load tested. If you are need to use a stainless steel shackle for any type of lifting operation or any other task which will be load bearing then you must ensure that the shackle is clearly stamped with a working load limit, these are usually the high tensile stainless steel shackles in our range.
