Stage Hoists and Rigging Equipment

Stage Hoists and Rigging Equipment

When its showtime whether in an arena, theatre, TV studio, film set or other stage setting the last thing you want the audience to be aware of is the rigging, hoisting and other behind the scenes equipment. All our stage equipment is completely black to minimise visibility.

Why Black Equipment Matters

Stage lighting can be extremely bright and standard rigging equipment with its silvery steel finish would easily catch the light. This will cause glints and flashes of light and reflections which would be quite distracting for the audience. Even if rigging is out of the path of bright lights it can still sometimes be seen against dark backdrops, especially above the stage and seen by those sitting at floor level.

Using equipment which is totally black will help them to blend into the background. Not only that but they will be much less likely to catch the light. This means the focus remains on the show performers and not the set up.

Entertainment Industry Equipment Available

From powered hoists to slings and shackles here we lay out the basics of each type of hoist and rigging equipment we can supply. Typically used during the set up of stage sets, i.e. hoisting up and holding lighting rigs or holding scenery, video walls or other stage equipment. C1 hoists can be used to move objects around during the performance.

Electric Stage Hoists

The predominant hoists in this category are certified either D8 or C1. There is one difference in how they can be used!

D8 stage hoists can only be used for holding loads above people.

C1 stage hoists can be used for lifting and moving loads above people.

These hoists are completely black including safety latches and chain.

We can offer similar hoists from top brand names such as GIS, Verlinde, Liftket and CM Lodestar.

Many of these powered hoists can be used with powered control panels for full automation and control of the hoist.

Other Entertainment Hoists and Winches

Not every lifting task needs a powered motor! Manual chain block hoists are useful for quick lifting tasks and can be very helpful when setting up the stage, especially in smaller venues. Black chain blocks are often used on hanging light bars and décor and are easy to use and maintain, thus providing a good back up to an electric hoist.

Pile wind winches are another popular system used in the entertainment industry. There are a number of options available including manual and powered winches. They provide a more basic type of lifting system commonly used in trussing applications and on suspension bars, as well as curtain raising, light scenery and banners. Smaller venues or when lighter loads need to be handles these would be a good choice.

Connecting Hardware

There are many different types of connection hardware available which are used for connecting items together, typically the load to the hoist. We can offer a range of black hardware suitable for stage operations.

Shackles are probably the most popular due to their versatility and ease of use. Dee shaped shackles are used for vertical lifts only whilst bow shackles can be used for angled pulling and lifting.

Eye bolts are a screw in fitting, typically fitted to the load or where an anchor point is required for attaching other equipment. These are also available in a swivelling variety for easier positioning for the pull directionality.

Quick links are useful for securing two items together in a secure way.

Our black ratchet straps are ideal for holding items firmly in position and for securing loads on the move.

Lifting Slings

When it comes to lifting slings there are a few options to consider; A common choice is the soft round sling variety, these are ideal for lifting loads without causing damage to the load, they are light, flexible and easy to handle. Black options are available for stage and theatre tasks.

Round slings can also be supplied with a steel core which have better resilience when used under hot lighting. They are also a good choice when they need to be used against rough or sharp objects which could damage fibre slings.

Chain slings come in the standard 1, 2, 3 or 4 leg varieties and for the entertainment sector we can supply black chain and black end fittings including clevis hooks with a safety catch, shortening clutches, connectors and the master-link.

Access Equipment

It is often the case in this industry that quick access to high rigging points above the stage for lighting or scenery adjustment for example. We can supply black rope ladders which provide safe yet discreet access to these hard to reach areas. They have the added bonus of rolling up when not required and store easily.

Choosing the Right Stage Equipment

It is imperative to get the right equipment for this industry due to being used around performers and audiences. You should consider your venue, what you need to lift or secure and how they need to work.

Larger venues would probably consider powerful D8 electric hoists and potentially programmable control panels so the hoist can be operated from another, safer position. Robust hardware and slings will be a must!

A smaller venue may only require a pile wind winch or chain block and some lifting slings.

Safety on Stage

Safety is at the top of the agenda in this industry and these are just some of the habits you should apply;

  • Know your capacity limits; Every item has a working load limit. Never exceed it.

  • Regular Inspections; Check braking system; Check for wear, damage, rust, frayed fibres or other damage before each use. Every component should be in good working order.

  • Record Keeping; Inspections and certificates will need to be kept.

  • Train your crew; Rigging should be carried out by competent people.

  • Use the right product for the task; Don't mix up lifting equipment with securing equipment.

  • Complicity; Always refer to and adhere to manufacturers guidelines for all equipment.

Final Thoughts

Using quality rigging equipment will allow the creative teams to design great stage sets whilst keeping everyone safe. With a host of black products to choose from the stage set will work how you need it to without spoiling the look of the show.
