Steel rope is used in every stage set; without it many modern stage theatrics would be impossible or a safety hazard.
Many uses of wire rope on stage will mean it often passes through shafts of stage lighting and if normal, silver coloured wires are used they will glint and flash in the light and be quite visible. This could shatter the experience for the audience, betray illusions and spoil seamless mechanics of stage equipment.
Blackened wire rope is the ideal solution. It's matt black finish won't react to the lighting and will become almost invisible to the audience, simply melting into the darkness of a theatre.
When it comes to theatrical rigging, safety is fundamental and thus the steel ropes used in every rigging set up will have to hit the highest of standards. Safety factors can be different for different areas of use across the entertainment world. Typically for general rigging tasks a 5:1 safety factor is acceptable; for more critical loads such as moving objects or performers it will be 7:1, 8:1 or even 10:1 – the maximum safety factor used for lifelines.
Checks and inspections are frequent in this industry for obvious reasons – safety! Wire ropes are checked regularly and competent riggers will look out for wear and tear, abrasions, broken wires, kinks, distortions or crushed areas. More through inspections will take place at regular intervals by qualified personnel.
