No matter the type of stage set up you will want to minimise the look of rigging equipment as much as possible so that it doesn't detract from the performance. Black equipment is the go to throughout the industry whether TV and film, stage, concert venues and other similar productions. Black finishes will be much harder to see and will not reflect the light and causing distractions.
Here is some information regarding different types of rigging components including connectors, slings and straps and access equipment.
Connecting hardware offers a means of connecting and/or anchoring different pieces of equipment, sometimes used to connect a load to a sling or hoist or simply to connect and hang cables.
Eye Bolts provide a strong attachment point and may be fitted to a load for easier hoist or sling attachment or fitted to a suitable place to provide an anchor point for holding items in a certain position.
Shackles are a popular connector offering good versatility and security. These U shaped connectors are secured with a screw pin and often an additional safety measure like a nut or cotter pin to ensure it will not disengage during movement.
Quick Links are small steel connectors typically with a screw gate closure. These are ideal for lighter items such as light drapes or small hanging signs, they are not a substitute for heavy duty shackles.
These are popular with touring productions and may be used for lifting and securing loads on set and during transportation.
Round Slings come in different colours as to the industrial standard, these would not be suitable for stage use. We can supply black round slings for this specific industry with effective working lengths up to 4 metres and 1 tonne capacities.
Steel Core Round Slings are ideal for load handling when chain or wore rope could cause damage to the load. The black soft outer offers good protection whilst the core is made from steel rope and encased in a double wall sleeve. These can handle 2 tonne loads.
Black Ratchet Straps are great for securing equipment together and can be used for tightening and holding loads in position. Typically used during transportation of stage items as well as stabilising set pieces. Not to be used for load lifting.
Access equipment typically provides a safe means of reaching high or difficult to reach rigging points or technical positions. When standard ladders or MEWPS (mobile elevated work platforms) are not suitable rope ladders are a good option. Our black rope ladders can be rolled up when not needed, thus can be hidden away unseen.
When using hoists, winches and other rigging components in the entertainment industry there are many regulations to follow, standards to meet and directives to adhere to.
These include BS790-1, the specification for the design and manufacture for equipment used above the stage. BS7906-1 is the code of practice for the installation of rigging equipment, however this has now been superseded by the latest BS EN 17206:2020, entertainment technology. The SQP2:2018 code of practice affects electric chain hoists used in the industry (now incorporated into the EN 17206 standard).
HSE and EU-OSHA are the places to go for regulatory information; BSI, ENA or ANSI are the places to go for information on standards.
PLASA, NRAG and ESTA are excellent organisations for guidance and rigging codes of practice and CoP for long link chain use.
