Wheel straps or car transporter straps are frequently used in the vehicle transportation industries as well as for vehicle recovery. They are used to secure vehicles to the transporter lorry by using the wheels as the anchor point.
Car transporter wheel straps come in three parts. Firstly there is the main part – the ratchet strap, there are 2 pieces, the shorter strap with the ratchet handle attached and the long piece for securing around the load/wheel. Each incorporates some type of hook or connector to anchor the car wheel strap to the trailer/transported flat bed. The third piece is a simple, short strap which is usually called the wheel choker strap, these can have soft loops or metal eye fittings.
The choker strap threads through the longer ratchet strap which then passes around the rear of the wheel. Holding the choker in front of the wheel, the ratchet strap is passed through the eye at the other end of the choker and then into the ratchet handle. With each end hooked securely into the trailer anchor points, the handle can be repeatedly ratcheted to tighten the strap fully.
It is a simple device for quick and easy fitting to a vehicle. Choker straps come in different formats, the traditional option is a flat webbing strap with metal eyes; the modern option uses a round sling and wear sleeve and has soft eyes.

The vehicle and transport sector has specific guidelines to follow when towing and transporting vehicles and should always be followed.
The more points that are secured the safer the vehicle will be during transportation. Turning, stop & starting and sudden braking will all have an impact on how the restrained vehicle will behave and move around.
It is also recommended that all straps should be checked regularly throughout your journey. The first time should be within 5 miles and then each time you stop or 50 miles or so, to ensure the straps remain tight.
Wheel straps are typically made from polyester webbing material and normally gives/stretches a little (around 3%) so it makes sense to check them periodically. A little stretch can enable quite a bit of movement in the vehicle which is not ideal for stability and safety.
