Eye Bolts

Eye bolts can be utilized with much of our lifting gear range. We are able to supply a vast range of lifting eyes which have different features to suit a wide array of tasks.

Long shank, dynamo and collared designs are all popular.  Most of our lifting eyes can be purchased in metric or BSW Whitworth sizes ranging up to the M27. M6 eye bolts, M8 eye bolts, M10 eye bolts and many more sizes are readily available but the M16 eye bolts are probably the most popular size. So whatever your requirements, we can provide a product to match. Some of our range have special features including oval or egg shaped reevable links, to aid in more angular lifting scenarios. Additionally we supply eye & bow nuts, which screw onto an existing bolt.

Manufactured from quality steel you can be assured of hardwearing, durable products that are robust  enough for arduous lifting tasks. They are normally self-coloured, but electro-galvanization or hot dipped galvanised may be an option. Certification is issued with every item we sell,  and if required an EC declaration of conformity.

Eye Bolts

What is an Eye Bolt?

An eye bolt is a critical piece of lifting equipment for safe handling and moving. They are typically used for creating anchoring & suspension points on loads which need frequent moving or when slinging the load is not an option. By securing the screw in eye to a load, a sling or load hook can be easily attached ready for hoisting. There are different types and sizes of bolts that have different load limits.

Types Of Eye Bolts

These lifting eyes are available in a variety of sizes and shapes from Lifting Gear Direct to accommodate very specific needs; some eyebolts will have round heads while others can be oval, there are also models with reevable links. Reevable links enable easier connections and angled loading and are available with Working load limits up to 6 tonne.

Threading on the shank can be different between designs (metric or BSW Whitworth threads usually available) and come in a range of lengths including the much lengthier long shank version.

Standard long shank varieties come in a range of sizes with the longest shank length being 7 inches or 178mm and thread diameters up to 1 ¼ inches or 30mm.

Most varieties can be galvanised for hostile or outdoor environments allowing complete flexibility. They are also available in stainless steel formats.

Collared types are probably the most popular in our range with top WLL coming in at 20 tonne, and the reevable link option with top WLL's of up to 6.3 tonne.

We also supply dynamo types with up to 16 tonne WLL, stainless steel, eye nut & bow nut varieties as well as bolts with a choice of  links to enable angled loading.

Eye Nuts and Bow nuts are another type falling into this category. Although loading will be done in the same way as normal eyebolts they differ from the standard variety in that they do not have a threaded shank. Instead they have an internal thread within the base of the eye which is then screwed onto an existing bolt.

Stainless Steel Eye Bolts are another option and provide additional protection when used outdoors or in more hazardous environments. Make sure they are proof load tested and stamped with the SWL before using for any lifting task. Some are untested and are typically used for decorative purposes.

You will also find a range of specialist bolts which includes a gate version and a grade 8 model should you require these.

Collared or Dynamo?

The two popular types of these suspension points are collared eye bolts and dynamo eye bolts.

The collared variety can be used for some angled lifting tasks, more if they incorporate a reevable egg link. The Dynamo variety should only be utilized in straight lifts.

Always consult the lifting charts to find the correct lifting capacity reduction required for each permitted angle.

Choosing a Lifting Eye

There are many points to consider when choosing this type of suspension point, here we discuss a few key points. Ideally the suspension should be chosen in such a way that every sling system (hook assembly, ring assembly, wire rope slings and round slings) can be used without necessitating additional manipulations which are time consuming and insecure.

Swivel designs are ideal for lifting loads from a variety of angles without the risk of unscrewing. Standard designs are ideal for straighter lifts, although you can lift at some angles safely if they have an incorporated reevable link.

Non-rated lifting points mean a high safety risk, they must have an identified “working load limit” manufacturers identification markings and must meet all lifting requirement standards in order to use them in any lifting application.

Other points to consider is the length and width of the threaded shank, will it fit in your intended position? Choosing the correct thread type is also important. For example a metric thread bolt will not work with a BSW Whitworth threaded hole.

Obviously the safe working load limit is a major consideration so think carefully about the load weights you may be lifting. NEVER exceed the stated WLL.

EYE BOLTS FAQ'S

What are the different types of eye bolts?

There are quite a few options when it comes to eye bolt types. Collared eye bolts are one of the most popular types as they can be used for some angled lifts. Some eye bolts are supplied ready fitted with a reevable link for easier use. Dynamo eye bolts usually have a larger eye which can be helpful for positioning larger hooks and slings, these can only be used for straight, axial lifting tasks. Long shank eye bolts are also popular and have a much longer thread for fitting to deeper surfaces and a for a better grip.

What are eye nuts and bow nuts?

Eye and bow nuts form a lifting point just like standard eye bolts, however they do not have a threaded screw shank but simply a threaded hole. The eye nuts are designed to screw onto an existing bolt to create the anchor point. Eye nuts are round whilst bow nuts are more oval, d shaped.

What eye bolt thread types are there?

Eye bolts are supplied in a variety of screw thread types in order to accommodate different screw holes. BSW Whitworth (British standard), UNC (USA type) and metric threads are all available at Lifting Gear Direct.
