Overhead cranes can be found in many places from factories, fabrication shops and manufacturing plants to automotive production, shipyards and steel or paper mills. They are used to anchor a lifting hoist and subsequently lift move heavy loads across the fixed runway system high above the factory floor.
When it comes to overhead cranes the wire ropes used are typically for hoisting purposes. They are fitted to the drum of a wire rope hoist, of which there are many types including crab style units. The wire rope will have a bottom block and hook for anchoring loads. The hoist will then wind the rope in and/or out to lift or lower the attached load. Wire ropes may also be utilized for other tasks such as grab ropes or trolley ropes depending on the cranes set up and its intended use.
Overhead crane rope comes in a variety of constructions to suit different hoists and loads. Non-rotating ropes are the safest as they will not spin whilst under load. Compacted rope constructions are also the preferred ropes for hoists and cranes because they are stronger and run more smoothly over the hoists drum.
We can supply a range of rope constructions suitable for this type of application. All ropes are galvanized to provide great corrosion resistance.
Full specifications on each rope can be found in the tab above. Hoist ropes we can supply include the following:
For your reference; fc = fibre core; wc = wire core & PIR = plastic impregnated rope.

This steel wire rope with a fibre core has good flexibility. It has a compacted construction for strength and to help prevent internal abrasion to the wires. Ideal for use with hoisting equipment. Available in diameters from 32mm to 42mm.

With a compacted outer and independent inner wire core for increased strength but reduced internal friction. Galvanized rope available in diameters from 30mm to 62mm.

With 6 compacted outer strands, each containing 31 wires and wrapped around a fibre inner core. Diameters from 10mm up to 28mm.

The 6x31 wire core option has 3 layers of wire strands for optimum strength on mid range rope diameters ranging from 10mm to 28mm.

This plastic impregnated wire rope cements the outer and inner cores together, decreasing internal pressure and making the rope more manageable, flexible and crush resistant. Available in diameters from 6.5mm up to 15mm.

With 8 outer strands or 26 wires and an independent wire core, with the addition of plastic impregnation, handling, strength and flexibility are optimized. Available in diameters from 16mm to 32mm.

Ideal for heavy duty applications including steel mills, this plastic impregnated hoist rope improves the ropes behaviour and comes in diameters from 34mm up to 58mm.

At 60mm to 65mm diameters available this super large rope is ideal for fleet angles and repetitive lifting cycles.

A high performance wire rope suitable for use as a hoist rope on most crane types. Having a Warrington centre Core, an inner layer with alternating diameter strands to fit snug into the outer layer. Plastic impregnation and compaction completes the rope. Diameters from 16mm to 19mm available.

Another Warrington core hoist rope, completely compacted with plastic impregnation. A heavy duty crane hoist wire rope in diameters from 20mm up to 32mm.

This rope has 9 outer strands with 31 wires in each. An inner layer with 8 strands in alternating sizes encase the 4 strand core, known as a Warrington core. Plastic impregnation completes this high performance hoist rope. 34mm to 50mm diameters available.

With a Warrington core and plastic impregnation the 9x36 hoist rope is great for heavy duty applications. This huge rope comes in diameters from 52mm up to 64mm.
Selecting the right rope comes down to the hoist and application. Single-layer drum hoists favour the 24×7 for its simplicity and easier inspection. Multi-layer spooling demands compacted ropes, thus the 35×7 for sheer capacity, the 6×36 where fatigue resistance is important, and the 8×19 where drum size limits rope diameter.
