7 x 19 Stainless Steel Wire Rope Construction

The reference 7 x 19 means that the rope has a construction made up of 7 individual strands, with each strand being made up of 19 individual wires. To clarify further 19 wires are twisted together to form 1 single strand. 7 of these same strands are then twisted together (using special machinery) to make 1 finished rope. There are 133 wires in total in a 7x19 wire rope, the ends can be sharp and can easily unravel unless secured. Typical securing options include a hot fuse and taper to seal the loose ends or by applying a rope termination under force. Tape can be used as a temporary measure, (typical for the transportation/delivery of bare rope).

Available Sizes

This wire rope is readily available in diameters ranging from 2mm to 16mm, providing options for both light-duty and more demanding applications. Smaller diameters can work well for decorative purposes, lighter tensioning, and rigging, whilst bigger diameters can handle heavier loads.

7 x 19 Flexibility

The 7x19 rope construction has good flexibility thanks to having more individual wires than constructions like 7x7. This rope flexes around pulleys and sheaves, making it ideal for tasks where the rope will need to bend. Examples include; winch rope, rope slings and control cables, architectural cable systems, marine rigging, garage door cables, and more.

Due to the higher flexibility the breaking load strength is lower than for other less flexible ropes. This doesn't mean the rope is inferior just select the appropriate diameter for your specific load requirements and always include an adequate safety factor.

When selecting wire rope, you should consider both the working environment and the mechanical demands of your task. Should you require a less flexible rope then consider the 7x7 or 1x19 constructions, for even more flexibility consider the popular 6x36.
