About 6x12 Galvanized Steel Wire Rope

This construction is termed 6x12 +7FC and consists of of 6 main strands, each strand contains 12 wires wrapped around a fibre core and subsequently twisted around a main, central 7 strand fibre core.

The fibre cores within this rope provide additional strength, flexibility and shock resistance to the overall rope. The fibre cores also help to reduce internal friction on the steel wires and therefore a longer service life can be expected.

The steel wires used are all galvanized and thus offer great corrosion resistance, although not quite as good as stainless steel.

Because this rope has good flexibility it is ideal for tasks that will need the rope to bend regularly such as in pulleys or winches. They are also utilized in hoist and crane applications as well as in mining, construction ans offshore industries.

Different Wire Ropes

wire ropes come in various formats in both galvanized steel and stainless steel. Constructions also vary between the two materials; Variations include the number of main strands, the number of wires within each strand and the type of core (wire or fibre). You will typically see numbers like 7x19; the first number always denotes the amount of key strands and the 2^nd number tells you how many wires within each strand; typically more wires = more flexibility. Sometimes you will see the letters FC or WC (or IWRC) after the numbers these stand for fibre core, wire core or independent wire core.
